Speaker Bio
Julie Carmean serves as a Senior Educator and the Manager of National Teacher Programs for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. She creates and facilitates professional development programs for educators, nationally and internationally, onsite, and online. She and her team produced the National Gallery’s two Massive Open Online Courses for teachers—first, Teaching Critical Thinking through Art with the National Gallery of Art, serving over 30,000 participants since its launch in 2019, and second, Teaching Complex Thinking through Art, launched this spring of 2024, which helps teachers integrate art by applying Harvard Project Zero thinking routines. She also builds educational networks among US museums and schools through the Across the Nation lending service partnership program and annually leads the Summer Institute for Educators, convenings around ideas of integrating art into classrooms, most recently supporting Social-Emotional Learning and empathy-building through art. Julie believes that access to art and meaningful art-centered learning experiences contribute to a holistic education, preparing students to reach their full potential.
